What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a very common vision condition caused by an irregular curve of the cornea. Instead of being perfectly round, the eye is shaped more like a football, which can make vision appear blurry or distorted at all distances. Common symptoms include eyestrain, headaches, and difficulty seeing fine details—especially after prolonged visual tasks. Astigmatism is very common and is the irregular curvature of the cornea which decreases the ability to see fine detail. Headaches and eye strain after prolonged use of the eye are common symptoms of an uncorrected astigmatism.

There are three primary types of astigmatism:
Hyperopic: One or both principal meridians of the eye are farsighted.

Myopic: One or both principal meridians of the eye are nearsighted.

Mixed: One prinicipal meridian is nearsighted, and the other is farsighted.

Advanced Surface Ablation

Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) is a laser vision correction procedure used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It is often recommended for patients who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas or other factors.

Unlike LASIK, ASA is performed on the surface of the cornea rather than creating a flap. This approach preserves corneal structure and can be a safer option for certain patients.
