Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye, its structures and function (vision).

Only an ophthalmologist — an eye medical doctor and surgeon — is qualified and licensed to provide the full range of eye care from exams, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, prescribing medications, and performing eye surgery, to prescribing and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct vision problems.

An ophthalmologist is either a Medical Doctor (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (OD).  These specialists have completed the usual 4 years of medical school training and an additional four years of hospital-based residency in ophthalmology.  Many ophthalmologists are also involved in scientific research on the causes and cures of eye diseases and vision disorders.
